Remember, Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite!

BugZip Bed Bug Resistant Luggage and Clothing Encasements

Bed bugs, which are also known as bedbugs, are small insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, including people. Their name comes from the fact that they prefer to live near where people sleep and especially beds. While they are not entirely nocturnal, they are most active at night and can bite a person many times without being noticed.

In the days when beds were made of organic materials like straw, leaves, and reeds, which could rot, bed bugs were major pests. People would resort to keeping their beds far away from walls or even placing their bedposts in cans filled with kerosene in order to keep the bugs away. There were also sleeping rules to keep the bugs at bay, like not letting sheets touch the floor. These rules are the most likely origin of the phrase "don’t let the bed bugs bite".

Bed Bugs Up Close And Personal

Bed bugs had been largely eradicated in the 1940’s in the U.S. but in the past decade they have come back in a big way. Their return is mostly the result of increased traveling to areas like the Middle East and Asia, with the bugs finding their way into suitcases. If you get a lot of bug bites that look like mosquito bites but are in neat rows of several bites, you probably have a bed bug infestation. However, often there can be no sign of bites at all, but just a general itchiness of the body. If you have unexplained itchiness you should check for evidence of an infestation by looking in your bed and the immediate area for dark spots left by their feces, as well as dead bugs and bug parts. While bed bug bites rarely pose a serious threat to health, the bugs should definitely be eradicated if an infestation occurs.

To eradicate bed bugs, there are several things that can be done. Whatever method you use, you should clean infested rooms and launder your bedding very thoroughly. Special care needs to be taken with mattresses, which unfortunately may need to be discarded. Bed bugs are unlikely to be completely eliminated just with cleaning, so you should also hire a pest control company. Exterminators generally use insecticide liquids and sprays to kill the bugs along with their eggs, but another option is to try another, newer technique which doesn’t involve poisonous chemicals. This new technique kills bugs with high temperatures. As they say, "Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite!"

  1. I think all 210 people who saw this video became dead bugs.

  2. It often seems that bed bugs arise from nowhere. The bugs are efficient hitchhikers and are usually transported in on luggage, clothing, beds, furniture, etc. Outbreaks can often be traced to international travel from countries where the bugs are common, such as Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, Asia or Central/South America.

Bed bugs can live in almost any crevice or protected location. The most common place to find them is the bed. Bed bugs often hide within seams, tufts, and crevices of the mattress, box spring, bed frame and headboard.

Eliminating bed bugs from mattresses and box springs is challenging. If there are holes or tears in the fabric, the bugs and eggs may be inside, as well as outside. There also are restrictions on how beds can be treated with pesticides. For these reasons, pest control firms often recommend that infested beds be discarded. If disposal isn't an option, encasing the mattress and box spring will be helpful if bugs are still present. (Allergy supply companies sell zippered bed encasements for dust mite prevention)

  3. Only female mosquitoes bite, and all mosquitoes live on the sugar found in plant nectar, not on blood. But there is a reason females seek blood.

Female mosquitoes, unlike males, have a proboscis. This is a long thin needle-like built-in syringe located at the mouth. They use this to impale their victims, in order to fill their abdomens with blood. Proteins in the blood are necessary to produce fertile eggs. Since males cannot produce eggs they have no need for blood. Females require a new blood 'meal' for every nest they lay, and produce about 250 eggs per meal.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water where they hatch into squirming larva. The larva molt four times before going into the next stage of pupa. Inside the hardened case of the pupa, the adult mosquito forms and eventually hatches.

Female mosquitoes live anywhere from one to several weeks depending on the species and the environment. Some females can survive the winter to lay eggs in the spring, before dying. Males generally live 4-5 days, and die after mating.

Mosquitoes have been evolving for 30 million years. During that time they've built an impressive array of sensory receptors. They possess chemical, visual, and heat sensors, all designed to zero in on a blood source.

The chemical sensory receptors are located on the antennae, which allow them to detect carbon dioxide. All mammals give off carbon dioxide, including humans. Our skin excretes the gas, as does our breath. A mosquito can detect this scent from 100 feet (30 meters) away.

Insect repellants containing the active ingredient, DEET, work by confusing the chemical receptors of the mosquito so that they cannot zero in on the source of the carbon dioxide.

When a mosquito bites it injects a small amount of saliva that thins the blood so it doesn't coagulate in the narrow channel of the proboscis. When it's done feeding, some of this saliva remains in the wound. This causes an immune system response and itching. A welt forms, known as a wheal, and the body goes to work breaking down the proteins from the saliva. The bite will continue to itch until the body has broken down all of the proteins.

Mosquitoes can carry diseases that can be transferred to humans through their bite. Some of these are malaria, encephalitis, West Nile virus, Yellow and Dengue Fever. To keep the mosquito population down, avoid allowing standing water to collect. Flowerpots, trash lids — anything deep enough to collect a puddle can be a breeding ground. Fountainless birdbaths or any other necessary standing water should be flushed with the hose every few days. If you have a fishpond the fish will eat the mosquito larva.

There are about 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide, 150 of which are found in North America. New Jersey, which has 63 species, is sometimes referred to as the Mosquito State.

Awesome! I love hearing all about them! We certainly had lots of those experiences in TZ, too! Here…well… We did eat some specially flown in from TZ grasshoppers/termites/flying ants, not sure what they were. A family brought them back! Can you imagine taking those through customs? I had an uneaten apple confiscated, much less a grocery sack of dead bugs! Can't wait to see ya'll!

he should have used dead bugs. instead of hole punchers.

  7. tomo juve says:

    1. Wash all your bedding items with HOT HOT water. Bed bugs cannot survive in heat over 10 degrees.

    2. Use a steam cleaner on the mattress and any other bedding items that you cannot wash with hot water. That kills the existing bed bugs.

    3. After everything is dried, apply Bed Bug Powder that is available on the site below. The powder is 100% natural and no chemical contained. It is safe to humans and animals, but is deadly to bed bugs. Lightly sprinkle it on the mattress and all the crevices on the bed. That protect you from incoming bed bugs if any.

That is the only way to get rid of bed bugs and also protect yourself from newly born bed bugs. Bed bugs are very very good at hiding. So it is very hard to get rid of them all at once even though you use a steam cleaner. But Bed Bug Powder will kill them all after that, and what I like it about is that it does not contain any toxic ingredient so that I don't have to worry about my cat.

Since I started using Bed Bug Powder, I have not gotten any bed bug bites, and cat is healthy with no flea and ticks at all.

Lastly, do not use a plastic mattress cover. It just creates more spots for bed bugs to hide. Also hiring a "PROFESSIONAL" exterminator is NOT a good idea. I have done it, but it was just waste money. All they did was to spray a toxic liquid all over the house and made me sick for weeks, and it did not kill bed bugs. They came back!!

    Good luck!

The most important lesson I learned this summer is a tad bit on the goofy side. I learned that I should always carry bug spray when leaving the country. None of my family members got any bug bites on our trip to the Dominican Republic. I, on the other hand, received a total of 23 bug bites in a span of one week. The moral to be taken from this story is to carry bug spray on the off chance that you're sweet-blooded like me.

  9. emmetha says:

    Paulene,

It is not natural for ticks to be on walls. They feed on warm blooded animals like dogs. Of course, we can get them outside in the grass or trees too, so there are times they will NOT be on an animal. But I get the impression they have left the dog, and went to the walls, which is not normal. I would guess that they would be a problem if they went from the wall to your body.

Get some insect spray. Kill them and say the name of Jesus over your house. This is in case, there is witchcraft nearby, which is activating them to seek humans to infect.

  10. ebalderro says:

You got the terms mixed up. Cold blooded animals need little to eat, while warm blooded animals have to eat constantly to stay alive. Dinosaurs and birds are closely related and it’s known many species were warm blooded based on how active their lives had to have been. T-Rex in particular,it’s size alone shows it had to have been warm blooded as a cold blooded animal that big wouldn’t live very long.

  11. rich grine says:

I think the distinction is that mammals give live birth, have mothers who secrete milk, and fur.

Birds, of course, lay eggs, don't nurse, and have feathers.

I was never a science guy, but I think those are the distinguishing characteristics of mammals that separate them from other warm blooded animals.

  12. skerschiel gel says:

I'll stick with the opinions of Robert Baaker, who for many years have argued these points & that of dino's being warm blooded animals.

  13. Friday p.1

12 :The topic i have chosen to do is animal testing, i have chosen to do this because i feel this is something that should be stopped and not just ignored. i have found some facts about my topic which are just shocking such as more than 15 million warm blooded animals are used in research every year!! These poor creatures do not deserve to go through the pain and suffering for our pampering. Scientists estimate that 100 species go extinct every day. That's about one species every 15 minutes. That is just horrible, to think because of our species cant look after another species properly, they die.

Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States. Dogs, rabbits, rats, mice and even monkeys are used to test safety of common household products, prescription medication and cosmetics. The product or its specific ingredients are applied to the animal’s eyes or skin. Another method is to pump a product through the animals air ways or stomach, which can cause horrific injuries. Here are some reasons of why people do this to such innocent creatures:
    . ignorance
. they are defenseless which makes them an easy target.
. communication barriers between humans and animals
    . personal pain
    . animals suffer in silence
. Desire to assert power or authority
Animals have been placed on this earth alongside and with us humans. We use them for food, clothing, transport, protection, entertainment and companionship. As having more of an understanding of our world and technology we have become the dominant species.
    statistics:
In the UK, there were nearly three million experiments on live animals in 2002.
Across all of Europe, there are approximately 12.1 million animal testing experiments done each year. While there is some debate regarding the statistics of which country is the highest tester of animals, Britain is thought to be one of the top user of animals with its use of nearly three million animal experiments each year.

The Catholic Church allows animal testing in the hope of creating new and better means of health treatments for both humans and animals. But it must be done in the most humanely way possible.

We should care a bout the environment because:
. We have a responsibility to pass it on to the next generation.
. We need some were to live
. As it is the only way to survive

  14. brian engh says:

That's an interesting thought, but I really don't see much of a correlation between lung size and naris opening… Whales are huge and warm blooded and have GIANT lung capacities, but don't strike me as having proportionately large dilated naris. Elephants too, are large warm blooded animals and their lengthy trunks have relatively small nostrils at the end. Furthermore, living avian dinosaurs (birds) don't appear to have disproportionately large nostrils, despite having respiratory systems which account for more of their body volume than any other living vertebrates.

Also, I just don't think it would be very practical for an animal that browsed in the treetops to have exceptionally large, open nostrils. It would seem to me that it would be easy for bits of twigs and bark and lichen to get snorted up. And that would be bad.
